New needs in step with international growth
Tampnet is the world’s largest offshore high-capacity communications network in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. As a provider of telecommunications services to customers in oil and gas, wind energy, the maritime sector and telecoms operators, Tampnet depends on maintaining safe and effective operations in some of the world’s most demanding environments.
After Tampnet began growing internationally, several challenges emerged:
- Cumbersome and outdated processes for documentation
- Lack of a comprehensive platform for quality and document management
- The existing solution was preventing operational scaling
Tampnet needed a partner that could both deliver a modern management system and bring expertise in process management to strengthen and streamline operational work across departments and national boundaries. In 2023, Tampnet therefore chose to implement Certain QMS.
Implementation and roll-out of Certain QMS
Certain has been a close sparring partner during Tampnet’s initial phase with Certain QMS — from process mapping to data migration in the quality management system. This has made it straightforward for Tampnet to get the system up and running and make full use of its functionality.
Audhild Smith-Bergtun, QHSE adviser and business consultant at Certain, says the following about the implementation:
— We have supported Tampnet through their own mapping processes. We have contributed technically, operationally and in an advisory capacity, to ensure that Tampnet has the best possible foundation for their quality and documentation work.
To map and describe Tampnet’s work processes, several structured workshops have been conducted based on lean principles and BPMN guidelines. Each workshop has had a clear agenda and defined objectives, ensuring an effective mapping process that reflects actual practice.

Approach to process mapping.
Simon Grapes, Head of QHSE at Tampnet, says the following about the collaboration:
— At Tampnet, we have benefited greatly from Certain’s expertise in process mapping. Our focus has been on visualising the workflow as accurately as possible, with Certain handling all the practical aspects and providing us with valuable input based on previous experience. Using Certain’s skilled consultants has given us a more efficient use of our teams’ time and has made the process itself feel much less daunting.
How Tampnet will make use of more features in the system
Tampnet is now in the process of adopting the full breadth of functionality in Certain QMS. Following a successful initial and configuration phase, the company is in the final stages of document migration and is approaching full operation of both the document and process modules. This will provide better control over governing documentation, clearer links between procedures and processes, and easier updating and revision of content.
Certain has also assisted with technical setup, customisation to Tampnet’s visual identity and integration with internal HR systems. This ensures that the solution feels like a natural part of Tampnet’s digital ecosystem, giving users a seamless and effective working environment.
Once all modules are in use, Certain QMS will function as a unified framework for quality, process improvement and operational support, and will become a central platform in Tampnet’s continued digitalisation journey.
The new quality management system is set up for growth
With the introduction of Certain QMS, Tampnet has established a robust foundation for further digitalisation and global scaling. The system facilitates a shared approach to working with quality, processes and improvement, regardless of geographical location. This provides a comprehensive framework supporting both local adaptation and central governance.
Tampnet can already see clear results:
- Critical parts of the work processes have been identified, making it easier to uncover bottlenecks and improvement actions.
- A consolidated and structured process overview has created greater transparency and a shared understanding across the organisation.
- Standardised processes and clear allocation of responsibility have reduced margins for error and strengthened the safety of operations.
- Integrations with operational systems ensure that quality work is closely linked to day-to-day operations, providing a better data foundation and faster follow-up.
- Power BI integration makes it possible to visualise key data from the quality management system in real time, enabling management to make more informed decisions based on up-to-date analyses.
— With clear processes, integrated systems and a solid framework for continual improvement, Tampnet is now well positioned to meet future requirements for safety, quality and efficient operations, both nationally and internationally, concludes Smith-Bergtun.
